Things to do on International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD)

The rights of people with a disability were first recognised in England in 1970. Since then, the rest of the world has followed. In 2006, United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The CRPD has since had 163 countries sign up, including Australia.

The United Nations started IDPwD on the 3rd of December 1992 and it has continued annually ever since. The Australian Government has supported this event since 1996 with grants and activities around the country.

‘International Day of People with Disabilities is a special time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disability and increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance.' Wade Lange - Managing Director of International Day Of People With Disabilities Limited

The theme for 2021 is 'Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.' While the pandemic has hit us all hard, it has been especially hard for those with disabilities having interruptions in routine healthcare and rehabilitation. Social isolation has also been difficult placing more strain on mental health.
